Hi Richard,

Some wonderful things are happening over here.

I don't agree with all of Silliman's opinions, but I think he's an important poet, if only because him & his mates initiated a new tradition in poetics.

I was just reading Bernstein's 'Absorption' in the excellent Rothenberg/Joris anthology Poems for The Millenium.

Rae Armantrout is my favourite
of the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E group.

Oppen was very influential on her poetics.

Hi Michael

The Language movement - from some angles - can bear criticism as Scott does and so on - but it was /is an important movement ideologically and poetically etc

I have read most of the language poets (Armantrout is good - great in fact) and some of those who have developed from them ... nowadays writers in that movement have fairly diverse views and practises. I think Silliman's views have to be separated from his poetic practice etc - as with Pound etc but this whole issue is very complex - it goes into what happened with Brief and also what happened in NY etc in about 2000...

Let's say there are dangers getting saturated with polemic regardless of one's political position...

Scott is to embedded in politics - I know what it's like - it takes one over - conversely such "academic" writers as Geraets etc were rather abstract or esoteric and others even took a very right wing view - now we need to discuss that (does ones view - world view matter to a poet - how does it - if a person has some very "wrong" political views - are all his other views etc "wrong" - etc etc) but writers and others all talked past each other both here and in the US ...

Academics such as Dr. Leggott and Kommissar Jack - great people and poets - seem to me to be scared to engage deep issues... or to challenge these issues Scott raises... Scott has a tendency to throw the poetical baby out with bath water!

Bruce Andrews is is good value - there are many others..of course
the language movement is not the be all and end all! Loney didn't help things by his rather childish responses to the change in editorship - nor did Curnow and Davis etc

Silliman needed to discuss the issue in more depth - not just drop some complaint and some crap about Libel (over what is rather trivial really) as if he is some kind of Poetics Fuehrer - after all Scott's post was quite important from many angles (I don't agree about Robbe-Grillett - he is a great writer in my book! -but that is me! - his Blog is very good (as is Silliman's) and Scotus should engage these guys more... get more dialogue going with them.

I just won a weekend Chess tournament with no losses - 5 wins and one draw from 6! - and I won $300!

I think there are (at least) two problematic tendencies - briefly -

one away from theory of any kind

the other to be "rule bound"

actually these are issues in Chess...

There are other issues - can we evade politics - or does it pervade all certain of the Langpos and also from Barthes etc

or do we go all the way with Derrida etc..or all the way with Marx.

I think all writing is political to some degree - that said such writing as Robbe-Grillet's (writing degree zero) was already known by Barthes sometime ago to be quickly absorbed into "bourgeois " thinking etc in fact his own writing (he knew) could be..how to be inside and outside the system - we try to subvert but we are also a a part of society...

Also even writing that is "normative" has value - in fact this was acknowledged by Bernstein...these issues continue to plague the waking and the sleeping head!

I try to be "structural" and play with structure on this burning post modern beach of skulls and enlightened (and huge) green slugs - but my structure shrieks...
