The "AN" is short for, or "code" for,
Alice Notley - a poet I consider to be one of the world's greatest living writers.

The howl of the four horseman... blow their trumpets loud and proud. From each point of the square they turn inwards, towards the beast who has build a new tower.

Anonymous said...

The foundations are stronger than before...his techniques are far more elaborate...the four horseman better beware...he is ready to reign again.

Anonymous said...

The prowl of the four horseman...serving their master again, together the five shall rule and renounce the place whence they came.

Anonymous said...

Before their time is up the wasteland will seep through our veins. The master will begin to implode and the tower will fall again.

The beast stand aside it is deemed... now is the age of the harlot...who shall we ask commands these orders or do we allow them to propogate? The answer lies at the cross... turn it upside down and we have a sword ready to smite the diables. This is the balance... far short of victory... the beast and his legions tire of the harlots' ways and prepare for their time...we cannot sleep for a thousand years...o to sleep just for a moment...

The guru who killed the 60s. Layer upon layer upon layer. Here are the facts to consider. A beautiful wife with child, in the comfort of the home, brutally stabbed over and over, under the flag draped over the couch. A noose placed over the head and messages in blood on the walls. Can flower power be capable of more? Deeper and deeper you look upon, the messages from that time and the deeper you look you see, the glorification of crime.

Now there is the crime in the fashion of ritual sacrifice. The wife of a demonic director who later took on the curse of macbeth.

Anonymous said...

The lunacy of lunar landings, the smell of the woodstock sweat. The protests for vietnam echo still throughout the marble corridors of the west.

A slaughter inspired by beetles and a guru with the charm of the snake. The film of rosemarys baby the place of the head horsemans wake.

Unravel the text before thee RT and there is only one truth that remains...and that is the crime of ambition to reign in hell and forgoe the servitude of heaven.

tertius - good to "hear" from you!

enigmatic comments! - I have been abit distracted lately but will get back anon

I have been reading Jack Ross's enigmatic novel EMO and decided just now to look at this link

http://dinarzade.blogspot.com/

I may do a critique of EMO - the book is laid out so that remain "narrative" (if it can be so called) has another narrative printed more faintly and at right angles to this text - a story of androids and Hitler and a vivisectionist etc

Ross has been obsessed with 1001 Nights for years and has many many copies of it in many languages (and also many studies of it) - his interests see to revolve around (as well as pop culture and the Holocaust (evil or Abaddon) etc); Borges, infinity, labyrinths, arcana, sleeplessness and states of consciousness (hence e.g "Trouble in Mind" another book by him, and the previous REM - can be rapid eye movement: the eyes move rapidly when we dream (also we are totally paralysed in our voluntary muscles... when dreaming),story telling as in 1001 nights and Borges (also fascinated by infinity etc)..and transformations and change (hence Ovid's works are also put in the background - in Latin), and of course Hesiod finds his way in! (works and days was a phrase that Eliot stole from the title of Hesiod's book I think); but 1001 Nights (of which, unlike Borges or Burton, Jack has actually read all eth stories!) gets us back to Borges and Barthes who both struggle with the coneptof het 'auteur'; leads perhaps back to the idea of the death of the author etc and indeed the Arabic book (or stories of stories) is a series of tales which have no single author or "centre" per se....collective...

Another strand is the interest in translation via I think Walter Benjamin's ideas (I know Jack was very interested in his ideas on translation, the Tower of Babel idea, and so on) I interpret it (an essay by Benjamin on translation) that this process brings the original into a higher state of language or indeed "transforms" it totally into something new, rich, strange and not counted upon... (I'm cutting this back drastically)
but translation and transgression and transformation - the many versions and the endless story (in the main text there is a "vivisectionist" - (and that is also the title of a novel by Patrick White about an artist but I don't know if that is significant - I did read it some time ago)), and a writer who are blind (Borges - Homer - Milton?) and the transformations, the arcana, memory and or its loss, the weird and wonderful (the painting "Raphael's Dream for example) - and the link to "Nights...with Giodorno" (Ross's first book in the "trilogy" where androids and sleeplessness occur) Bruno" who postulated an infinite number of possible worlds and so on... also as one of the protagonists has written a 1001 Nights (commentary or story) and is probably partly Ross (or his alter ego) himself - in a sense we are inside an infinite loop of stories and transforms!! (Because framed by them!)

But re your comments - as far as I can decode them - I feel you might be implying I am being or becoming too esoteric and so on - well writers like to be "difficult" and or mysterious...even showy or "pretentious"...writers are always pretending in fact whether they mean to or not...

But I am always prepared to admit there is so much of literature and philosophy I find almost completely incomprehensible... but then ultimately the universe is so

But EYELIGHT is both "mysterious" but in other ways really straight forward - yes there is satire but it is not meant to be hurtful - and intend to "expand" on what I have presented recently so on...

I recall you had film idea involving Macbeth etc
I will get back to your comments soon.

The text is a social commentry on america after the beatniks in the syle or mode of antiquity.

Anonymous said...

Propoganda in american pop culture. The conscious, the modern dreams and fears and the ghost of antiquity.

Anonymous said...

Also the dangers of political and religious extremism (92 am poetry auck uni) not an implied response to eyelight.

Anonymous said...

'On the road' leading to chaos...the mode of 'confusion' is deliberate...am not that mad.

Anonymous said...

In between stream of consciousness and complete language deconstruction of the 80s and beyond...

Anonymous said...

That course in 92 seemed the most 'real'...

Anonymous said...

Between the forces that build and internal struggle to maintain the 'tower' and the inevitable dismantling or destruction of it.

Anonymous said...

Must repeat this is not related to your eyelight... but is concerned with the process of textual development in poetry...in the context of america post ww2 in the 60s especially

Anonymous said...

The 'wasteland will seep through our veins'...

Anonymous said...

And how the text cannot escape the social environment in relates to....'lunacy of lunar landings etc...'

Anonymous said...

However there is an element responding to your text, only in a remote sense...not direct correlation as that would be disingenuious.

Anonymous said...

And I 'dig' the 'infinite possible worlds' you state in your comments... this is exactly what my poetic attempt tries... the blur between several worlds...

Anonymous said...

And that is why I center on a 'real' event or in this case a crime as it brings forth multiple reactions and thickens the 'dream layer' of memory, sense and belief in 'other worlds'...

Anonymous said...

The 'tower' or civilization attempts to fill your 'beautiful void'..

Anonymous said...

It is only temporary (egypt greece rome britain america) and the tower will implode... the void or abyss is endless and timeless..

Richard said...

I see some of it now - extremism has probably always been with us. The 60s were a positive time. I was listening to ABBA the other night (on TV) - it brought a lot back...they were so alive!

I like this:

Before their time is up the wasteland will seep through our veins. The master will begin to implode and the tower will fall again.

A little Blakean or Yeatsian - strange that certain of us write still in these modes still...
(Alice Notley bridges the gap bteween irony and apocalypse etc - also Eliot himself borrowed the irony of Jules Laforgue - his (J L-F's) "Moral Tales " are great - he has brilliant (and funny version) of Hamlet...

Many writers - Ashbery, even Geoffrey Hill - but I notice the way Pound and even Jack Ross (in EMO and elsewhere) - brings the present into the past etc his Eva Android links to Hitler but Hitler (really to Augustus? - perhaps History reiterates) and in another series he conjuncts Britney Spears to Celan (whose parents were killed in the Holocaust and he committed suicide)...Ross clips his writing an d uses multiple narratives - now this style might seem very "clinical" but it works - I am starting to see how it does -not sure if it "gets there" - too much of maximalist am I !

Also he is,or can seem, "dark", but - there is also humour - satiric or parodic - I think the great writers are able to do this - even Faulkner for all his Southern "darkness" can be seen on one level to be hilarious - we maybe cant laugh (so easily!) at the death of Cordelia ...but we can laugh at Hamlet...sometimes element -thus the conjunction of Britney Spears with Celan has a comic element but it tells a truth about pop culture in the West or indeed everywhere...apocalyspe maybe not...but certainly what created Hitler and Celan was what created Spears...and she started out -well -idealistic I suppose (not that I really know their music I just extrapolate that she is another pop star - once young and pretty but perhaps destroyed by forces as Celan was... (he committed suicide...) [high and LOW culture -where is the break?]

Ovid, Homer, the Greek tragedians and philosophers are as relevant today as ever...we haven't progressed much (dubious concept this progress in any case) - inherently we are the same.

But I remain optimistic!

Language 'destruction' could be seen as a positive - the problem as always with literature is the moral or social concern -to what extent can we (withe symbolists -or eth Futurists, the Surrealists, or later the Langpos or the NY poets or various scribblers in NZ - perhaps sometimes such as Baxter "ground us" - if you ever get to read Brunton - of Aotearoa - he races away with the apocalypse in his creative pocket - I mean he did -he too is gone from this orb... )

The "politicos" try to "make progress" - the intelligentsia combine "sensibility" with creativity - some such as Laura Riding give up poetry almost completely... Robert Graves and Lawrence perhaps haunted her and us now...Golding also (of say Pincher Martin)...much to celebrate but much that is dark:

I like this:

"The lunacy of lunar landings, the smell of the woodstock sweat. The protests for vietnam echo still throughout the marble corridors of the west."

I was in those protests...there was fire in the hearts of people in the 60s - seems a deadness covers us with apathy as of ash as were racing toward 1984 - but 9/11 could be seen as a legitimate pay back for Vietnam, Chile, Argentina, Indonesia, Korea, etc etc etc etc Stockhuasen said it was a great work of art the destruction of the towers - seeing them collapse gives me the enormous frisson of a great new Gotterdammerung as in Wagner. they lie who are not fascinated by death and destruction....Holocaust and destruction as art. Hollywood run by massive capitalism from inside the bunkers of the Hitlerian Pentagon the great new cultural centre of the world!!

But what of love? And hope? The escappee from Pandora's Box??

This also -

"Before their time is up the wasteland will seep through our veins. The master will begin to implode and the tower will fall again."

Like the cycles of Yeats...Yeats rather remote and over obsessed with his world of symbols but from his structures - great poetry and he concerned himself with the murders, the chaos, and political events also ... as well as life lived intensely. Baxter lived intensely at Jerusalem in NZ. Curnow was perhaps too disturbingly "real" in the end...

John Geraets "He fucks with my head"

Hamish Dewe: "Good! That's just what he needs to be doing!"

What have the poets to say to us?

Titus Books are doing a good job keeping the creative fires alive...

Stochuasen's "Helicopter Quartet"...but this:

"...the tower will implode... the void or abyss is endless and timeless..."

Yes - 'abyme' or 'vide' is everywhere in the poetry of the French symbolists - the abyss is also recreative - fecund as with the Maori kore - the silence, the chaos (Tiamen (?) in Mesopotamian myths?) - the endless timeless moment. The blackness. The beautiful spider of blackness and perhaps hope. The unseen Presence in "Jealousy" by Robbet-Grillet - the "black lightening" of Golding or of his Pincher Martin, refusing to die forever...the mothering dark: Dylan Thomas...we mourn for you ... dying dead into your burning whiskey milk ("Never until the mankind making..."); Hopkins (the Wreck of the Duetschland); Milton, Blake, Geoffrey Samrt, David Jones, Hill, Keith Douglas ... Creeley, Alan Loney ("Squeezing the Bones"), Jack Spicer killed by language ...

Refresh me on this director who became obsessed with Macbeth...

"It is a tale told by an idiot, signifying nothing" - all of it?"
